The 3 Best Country Markets in New South Wales

Let’s face it, everyone loves a market!

Markets provide an opportunity for customers to pick up a bargain, sample local produce or buy some local art and handicrafts. There are even markets catering to car enthusiasts, antique collectors, foodies and more.

Markets can be found all over the world, in purpose built halls or marquees while others are tucked down alleys or spotted throughout town parks and reserves. Although the largest markets are usually found in the big cities, the most interesting ones (and often the cheapest) are generally in country areas.

Orange Regional Farmers Market

Orange in central New South Wales, is a town renowned for its agriculture, local produce and wine making and is home to many lovers of fine food. The local Orange Region Farmers Market is held on the morning of the second Saturday of each month and is an opportunity for local growers, farmers, cooks and chefs to showcase their produce. The market starts at 8.30 with locally roasted coffee, tea blends and freshly squeezed juice for the early birds. Pancakes and bacon and egg rolls are also on offer with homemade pizza available later in the morning for those who are peckish.

There is a wide variety of seasonal fruit and vegetables along with locally made preserves, honey, mustard and a stunning variety of freshly made artisan bread that beckons with its heavenly aroma. Award winning verjuice, olive oil, honey, jams and jellies are all available to taste and buy. Local farmers have freshly butchered high quality meat at great prices including venison, salt bush lamb and locally farmed goat. The wine growers of the district are also well represented and the opportunity to try before you buy is hard to resist.

Local cooks and chefs share their skills and expertise in cooking demonstrations showcasing the foods of the region from the local stallholders.  Plus if you’re interested in growing some of your own food, there are stall selling herbs, fruit trees and a range of other seedlings and plants during the warmer summer months.

Goulburn Brewery Craft Markets

The Goulburn Brewery Craft Markets are held on the fourth Saturday of every month excluding December and feature a wide variety of stalls from bric-a-brac to gourmet foods and everything in between. Open from mid morning to mid afternoon, the Craft Markets are a place for local artists, craftspeople, cooks and growers to showcase and sell their produce.

Market goers who enjoy rummaging through second hand clothes, buying something unique and handmade or sampling local goodies will love the Goulburn Brewery Craft Markets. There are a variety of food stalls if you’re planning on visiting over the lunch period or you can buy some of the locally grown fruit and vegetables and take it home to cook yourself.

Homemade jams, pickles, cakes, dips and sauces are in abundance and when you’ve finished stocking up on the local delicacies you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee (or ale if you’re that way inclined) in the courtyard. While you’re at the brewery, you might want to take a guided tour, visit the art gallery or catch a show at the cabaret theatre.

Moree Jellico Park Markets

The Moree Jellicoe Park Markets is host to over 80 stalls on the first Sunday of every month and is open to everyone. The popular outdoor markets attract a large number of market goers from far and wide and for good reason. The market features local produce, food stalls, children’s entertainment, handcrafted furniture, indoor and outdoor plants, poultry and more.

Once a year in September the markets collaborate with the Moree Motor Car Enthusiasts and hold a car show, where the local car enthusiasts display their modified and restored vintage cars. The Econo Lodge Moree Spa Motor Inn is only a 200m walk from Jellicoe Park and features a range of comfortable, spacious rooms to suit singles, couples and families.

There are several other markets dotted through New South Wales all with their own unique offerings and style. Make sure you visit the local tourist information or look for a community board to find out when and where local markets are being held. You never know what gourmet delight or hidden treasure you may find when poking around a country market!
